Boehner Lights the Capitol "Christ-mas" Tree

With a few words about religion and some help from a seven-year-old, House Speaker John Boehner officially lit up the 65-foot Capitol Christmas Tree on Tuesday.

Wearing a raincoat on what he called a “damp evening,” Boehner told those gathered on the West Front Lawn of the U.S. Capitol that the tree “flourishes as a symbol of everlasting life. And that life and light, of course, is Christ whose birth to Mary fulfilled a prophecy of joy and salvation.”

“...We best serve this story by serving one another, by showing that it’s more blessed to give than to receive,” Boehner said via C-SPAN’s live broadcast. "Especially when so many of our fellow citizens are without jobs and in need.”

After wishing everyone a “very Merry Christmas,” Boehner introduced a young Cub Scout named Johnny Crawford to help him flip the switch.
