In The Eye of the Storm

I talk about the weather a lot. There's a reason for that.

Right now, we have both a high wind warning and a blizzard warning in effect, for areas around and above Anchorage. All the heavy snows we've received recently - dry and fluffy stuff, due to the cold temps - are blowing, swirling and drifting like crazy in the windy areas.

There have been at least two avalanches on the highway heading south out of Anchorage, at McHugh Creek and points southeast, and the highway is closed between there and Girdwood. Oh, you live south of Anchorage?  You can't go home tonight; best get a hotel room.

I wouldn't live anywhere else I can think of ... not nohow, not no way ... but sometimes the winters can be a mite ... vexing.

I've only spent a couple times in AK. A summer when the hubby was working as a bush pilot while he was waiting for a slot as jet jock, and a summer after he was gone, where I went to heal. I loved it, every bit of it. But my life took me here, and I love it as well. But we get the *(#) cold WITHOUT the beauty. :-)

I know the feeling - but I take great comfort in the fact that while nature may be harsh, it is never dishonest! When nature tries to kill you, it's upfront about it, instead of the kind of backstabbing we all associate with DC and similar roach-motels...

God bless - and keep the home fires burning!

So sorry, you seem to be getting everybody else's snow this year!

Hope you don't have the same trouble we had with a blizzard last year. We had to block the attic gable end vent on the north side of our house because snow was blowing in. Shoveling is bad, but when you have to fire up the wet/dry shop-vac to get the snow off the insulation in the attic, it is a bit vexing too.

Hope you are warm and well.

The blue ribbon for understatement of the week.

Here in gentle, temperate South Missouri, the forecast for the immediate future is for rain with SOME snow, after 9:00 tonight, temps tomorrow morning at about 20 degrees, with wind at 35-40 mph, gusting to 45, and the combination of wet roads and temps at that 20-degree point will make icy roads for tomorrow morning. So far, today, the sun is shining brightly, the temp is near 50 degrees, and the wind is a gentle breeze. It doesn't compare to Alaska, but will be rather disagreeable tomorrow morning.

It must be "global warming" again: The fuel ship cannot reach Nome, and the water freezes between the icebreakers and the fuel ship faster than the icebreakers can break ice. Yesterday he fuel ship could barely move, and thing better was promised for today. What a shame that the ice freezes like that in those "warming" temperatures!
