Older Daughter, the Appleseed instructor, made another purchase the other day.

They also had the 7.62x54R* ammo: 20 rds for $5. Her only addition, other than elbow grease to clean the actual grease, was to add a slip-on recoil pad. You know, just in case, she said.
She's a happy camper, and I'm a proud papa.
* Thanks, PioneerPreppy.

Good for her...I think everyone should own at least one.
Agreed, my friend. Thanks.
You can see Russian Rifles from your house!
LOL @ Tincan Assassin
Shouldn't that be 7.62x54R?
Anyway I would recommend she not use the $5.00 per 20 surplus ammo in that as it is pretty corrosive, or the surplus ammo I bought was. I was forever cleaning my NG to get rid of it and then a week later had to do it again without shooting it as the stuff came back.
I love Nagants. I even bought a crate of five of em to hand out to buddies when needed.
Assassin, that's funny right there. :)
Preppy, thanks for catching that typo (okay, mistake). I'll tell her about the ammo, too.
Oh yeah! A very nearly perfect rifle. I have two. If she gets short of ammo and you can't find any drop me a line. I have some in reserve I'd be happy to donate to the cause.
The big thing we have found with that
surplus ammo is that it was ment to be used in MGs if you can get hold of
some Priv Partisan she will find it a far nicer gun to fire.
Very nice!
I shoot mine often, and have for years. Almost always with mil-surp of some kind. I just clean it, and no issues at all. Bore looks like the rifle was made yesterday.
Tell her to shoot a redcoat target with it, just to impress the kids!
I have the exact rifle.7.62 x 54R. If Mel has old military ammo, she will definitely need the recoil pad!! That stuff packs a mighty kick! Or at least the ammo I got with it did. Might have been because it was steel bullets instead of copper... AP?? Kicked more than a .30-06! Be careful!
Six, we'll keep that in mind. Thank you.
Ajdshootist, she bought some of that at Sportsman's Warehouse before she found the cheaper stuff, so she has some of each.
Carteach, I looked it over last night, and it's just like you said - the bore looks pristine. I cautioned her to keep an eye on it, anyway.
Bro, she found the recoil "slightly less" than her .30-06, she said. I figure it's because the older rifle weighs more than the modern, composite stock/shorter barreled .30-06.
Welcome her to the Club !
The are pretty awesome and rugged rifles; as others have said, everyone should own at least one.
Piece of advice I picked up when I purchased mine, take a spray bottle of Windex/Glass Cleaner with Ammonia to the range. When done shoot, hold the rifle muzzle down, action open and squirt the cleaner into the breech. Let it coat that and rotate the rifle while spraying more.
The ammonia neutralizes the corrosive primers. If really worried about it, soak a patch with the cleaner and run it through the barrel.
My daughter in law shot my Mosin Nagant on her 2nd ever range trip (she is originally from California) and fell in love with. Threatened to steal it so often, I bought one for her and my son for their wedding anniversary.
Thank you, 3boxes; I'll pass that along, too.
Nice! Nothing wrong with the recoil pad. I use one, and it makes shooting my 91/30 even more fun.
I always take a thermos of hot water to the range with me when I shoot corrosive ammunition. After I'm all done, I take the bolt out, pour the hot water down the bore, then hit it with a bore snake and an oiled patch. It's not a detail cleaning, but it flushes out the loose carbon and the salts from the ammunition.
Oh so pretty!
Daddybear, thank you - that's a good tip.
PH, isn't it, though? :)
She's braver than I am.
( where's my nice gentle 5.56? )
Jenny, turns out she's a recoil junky. Who knew? :)
Like one of your readers said, boiling water, then ammonia which will clean out the salts left behind from the primers (the source) then oil as normal.
Очень красиво!
Thanks, Stephen. She's reading these comments, and will take it to heart.
Thanks, Sarge - I think so, too!
I was in the Gun Dealers were i used to work today and they had two sniper
rifles up for sale both MosNag 7.62x54 second world war ones.
ajdshootist, I'd like to see those. :)
