She Burned Down an Apartment Building

In the category of stupid human tricks:
An Anchorage woman started the January blaze that destroyed a 24-unit Midtown apartment building when she lit a corset on fire while fighting with her boyfriend, a prosecutor revealed at the woman's sentencing Thursday.

The two-alarm fire at 3405 Eureka Street, a three-story building valued at $1.4 million, sent two people to the hospital ...

But here's the money quote:
According to a charging document filed against Collins, she lit a piece of clothing, dropped it in a trash can on the balcony attached to her boyfriend's apartment and put a cardboard box on top ... prosecutor Jonas Walker said in court Thursday it had been a corset. It was no surprise to the people in the courtroom that alcohol was involved.
(emphasis added)

The saddest part of this tragedy - apart from the families who lost everything they owned - is that this criminal is only going to serve one year. Just one.

That isn't right.

Rhetorical question. Why do people often suck others into their personal dramas?

Rev. Paul said...

That's a very good question.

You are correct, that is not right, one year? I'm shaking my head.

In the Navy I remember, Senior, there'd have been a blanket party for any judge who handed out such a light sentence.

Justice designed by we humans is imperfect, at best.

That's very, very true, Guffaw. But this judge wasn't even trying.
