Some Quick Notes

1. Alaska State Troopers have determined that the guy who shot a 600 lb brown bear on an Anchorage trail over the weekend was justified. No story here, other than to congratulate the fellow for being properly prepared.

A few local gunny-types are grumbling because he used an AK-74 instead of a proper bear gun (weapon of choice up here tends to be a revolver in either .44 Magnum or .454 Casull, although the .500 S&W is gaining popularity).

I say, shoot what you've got ... unless it's a .22 or .380.  Then you'd best borrow something adequate.

2. There's been another encounter with a brown bear on an Anchorage trail. Local wildlife officials are warning people to be extra cautious.

For the second time in two days, a brown bear acted agressively on Anchorage trails and prompts additional warnings.

On Tuesday, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game posted extra warnings on Rover's Run trail following a report of a brown bear charging a group of bicyclists. According to ADF&G, the incident happened around 10:30 a.m. and no one was injured.

"That is a trail we always warn people about," said Fish and Game Assistant Wildlife Biologist David Battle. "There are salmon in the stream right now and it's very dense vegetation so you can't see around you."

There's a video at the link.

3. I notice that visits to this little corner of the cortex tend to spike at 0400, local time. I appreciate the interest, but ... 4:00 am? That's pre-coffee!

I'll have to remember to put something up the night before, so y'all have something newer to read.  :)

Thanks, Matt. I was wondering if anyone noticed ...

I noticed the photo - is it from your desk?

I would think a .22 or .308 would only serve to annoy a bear.

PH, that's my desk at home. Looks some different now since I have a laptop, but the materials are still there.

Re: the tiny-bullet variety of handgun ... oh, yes!
