Something's In The Air

Unfortunately, it's falling leaves.

My wife and I were discussing the time of year on Saturday, and I remarked that at least the leaves haven't started changing yet. This, despite two weeks of nearly constant clouds, rain, and cooler temps.

But yesterday, geese were heading south, and this morning there were leaves on the ground. Not a lot, but it's the beginning of the season. Those in the trees have taken a decidedly yellowish tinge, too.

I know it always happens. I'm never in a hurry for the end of summer, though. It doesn't help to note that we always have snow by Halloween, either.

A couple more observations: my daughter's cats are both shaggy with the beginnings of their winter coats. As this is August, it speaks of an early winter, a cold one, or both.

And we've already had to run the furnace a few times, over the last 10 days, on days when the cool damp air chilled the house to an uncomfortable point.

Speaking of my wife, she spent part of yesterday afternoon preparing the meat which we'll consume this week: mostly chicken breasts and ground turkey for burgers. She uses a lot of spices made in Alaska, since Brigid's supplier of Penzey's spices is too far away.

But the place smelled wonderful for a couple of hours, as we walked around with mouths watering. :)

Sorry I don't have anything more fascinating this morning; I'm sure something will come up later.

Thanks for stopping by, friends. I appreciate it.

We even have Maple trees here with the starting tinges fo yellow and red. Heavy sigh - I suspect winter will start early this year. The air has the scent and feel of fall - a bit "heavier, a bit "richer" with earth scents - hard to explain but everyone knows it when they smell it here. Honestly, we need another 5 weeks or so of warm growing weather . . . that's going to be hard to pull off I suspect.

Preppy, I'll do my best. :)

If it helps any, Bill, I should tell you that our winter arrives about six weeks sooner than it does in the Midwest. Warm weather, though, is beyond our control.

Please. No apologies . .
I like your sharing the weather . . the turning of the seasons .. . domestic happiness (watering mouths :)
I've been cooking a lot of chicken and turkey burgers, too. Sweet corn and vine-ripedned tomatoes and life is really good.

Rev. Paul,

My husband and I were just commenting on how it felt outside this weekend. Temperatures were in the high 70's and low 80's, it felt like fall already.

I so worry how winter will be this year, I'm hoping not severe.

We do the same thing in our home, prepare meals in advance. The house always smells delicious over the weekend from the preparation.

Sandy, you guys are overdue for a break, vis-a-vis the weather. I hope you get a mild one.

Probably, gfa. But why take a chance on ordering something & then finding out we don't like it? Better to buy here & save ... or so sayeth the wife. :)
