Another Bear Attack in Anchorage

From the Anchorage Daily News:

A woman running on an unpaved road on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson was injured in a bear attack Sunday morning.

... Maj. Angela Webb said the victim was running on a popular training route ahead of her husband when she startled a brown bear sow with two cubs nearby. The incident occurred near Fossil Creek and Pole Line Road around 11:30 a.m.

"The bear knocked her out and dragged her for a bit," Webb said.

After the woman came to, she walked to the Davis Highway, where a passing driver picked her up and drove her to a medical facility on base.

The husband does seem to have disappeared from the story... Of course, the bear could have dragged her a ways and hubby was hunting for her and didn't find her before she got other help. Or he saw the bear and was running the other way.

Either is possible, PH.

Strange story... And dumb for running this time of year on the backside of the base...

Rev. Paul,

I have to agree with Old NFO.

You're right, NFO - not a good time to be in that part of the woods, here.

Agreed, Sandy.

Terrifying.
Being the chicken that I am . . . I'd probably cower inside my house and never wander outside if I were in serious bear territory.

It's safe in large groups, Cathy. And attacks are quite rare, even here. They just get a lot of publicity.
