How Dumb Can You Get and Still Breathe?

A 22-year-old man was jailed on a handful of charges after leading police on a high-speed chase Sunday that ended inside the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Troopers said the chase began at about 2:20 p.m. Sunday after they attempted to make a traffic stop at about mile 73 of the Seward Highway, in the Turnagain Pass area. The driver, later identified by troopers as 22-year-old Tylor Arndt, of Soldotna , first gave troopers a false name, then fled the scene, heading north in a blue Ford Focus at speeds of more than 110 mph, troopers said. Arndt fled troopers onto the Portage Highway, then into the oncoming traffic lane and beneath a gate that tunnel officials were lowering to close the tunnel, a one-lane tunnel connecting the Prince William Sound community of Whittier with the Southcentral Alaska's road system.

Once in the tunnel, Arndt kept fleeing, using emergency turnouts to pass other vehicles and eventually side-swiping a black Cadillac SUV while trying to pass it. Arndt eventually abandoned the Focus and continued fleeing on foot in the direction of Whittier.

He was eventually captured when he was found hiding behind a portable restroom near the Whittier end of the tunnel, troopers said.

Troopers said Arndt was found to be subject to felony arrest warrants for a previous eluding charge and for violating probation. He was charged with two counts of third-degree assault, reckless driving, failing to stop at the direction of a peace officer, making a false report, driving with a revoked license, driving in violation of a limited license and failure to report an accident.

It seems we have an answer to the question, "How stupid do you have to be, to flee by heading down a dead-end road to a town on the coast?"

Heh. Guess he knew the gig was up but ya a little better sense of direction would have helped him.

Preppy, I'm guessing he thought he'd head back up into the mountains over the tunnel, and try to make his way northwest from there. Not a good choice, either way.
