Friday, At Last

Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On Dept:  The reports are in, and damages from yesterday's 6.2 earthquake are:
  • three bookshelves fell over in a 5th floor law office downtown;
  • some ceiling panels fell in a high school gymnasium;
  • groceries fell off the shelves in some supermarkets;
and that's about it.

It's safe to say that's a testament to the very strong provisions of our earthquake safety building code.

Well, that and the fact that the 'quake was so deep: 64 miles down. The usual depth is between 30 and 45 miles, give or take, and a 6.2 at that depth would definitely have done more damage.

Our home? The only thing we found out-of-place was a food scale on top of the fridge. It had slid sideways into the way, and was perched at an angle.

In summation, let's just say that southcentral Alaska dodged a bullet yesterday ... and we're okay with that.

To Everything There Is a Season Dept: There's been frost on the car windows for the last several mornings, and that will be a near-constant until next March or April.

A good part of the leaves have fallen, and there's more "termination dust" (light snow) on the mountain peaks above town.

It won't be too long, now, before the first flurries appear. The 10-day forecast calls for highs only in the 40s, next week.

It's getting closer.

That's all I have, for now. Thanks for stopping by, friends; I'm grateful for every reader, and every comment. It's a reminder that there are still good, decent folk in this world.

Have a great Friday!

Rev. Paul,

Your highs are only up in the 40's.....yes, I can truly say snow will be coming soon.

Glad all you got was a good shake.

Sandy, the only difference this year is that it seems to be earlier than usual.

WSF - us, too. Could have been MUCH worse.

Good to hear you guys dodged that one. When I saw the reports of a 6.2 in Willow, I thought the worst. Didn't look at the depth or I would have breathed more easily.

We've been having beautiful weather here. Upper 60s during the day and mid to low 40s at night. Leaves are just starting to change, too. A couple of weeks and we'll be in full color.

joated, thank you. Our colors peaked a couple of weeks ago, and what's left is still pretty. But a lot of it's on the ground now. :)

Had a co-worker that was in Anchorage during the Good Friday earthquake of 1964. He said it was...interesting...

PH, it was a 9.2 magnitude that lasted for five minutes. "Interesting" is a good word ... :)

Thanks, Chickenmom. I'm sure the attorneys straightened that room. :)
Enjoy your fall colors.
