New Legislation Would Open Federal Lands to Hunters, Anglers

The Associated Press reports that Sen. Martin Heinrich of New Mexico and Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska have co-sponsored a bill "dramatically broaden access to federal land for hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation."

The copyright article goes on to say
"The bill would be a boon for hunters and anglers, opening federal lands and requiring the federal government to set aside money to make land more accessible. The only exception would be national parks and wildlife refuges. Improving access would also be required, including making paths more accessible and adding signs.

"Regulations on hunters and anglers would be eased. The bill would allow hunters to carry their bows and crossbows across National Park Service land, and hunters with legal firearms would be able to take them on land that's managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for water projects."

The article reports broad bi-partisan support with few critics. That's a good thing. You should definitely read the whole thing, especially the bits about lead shot, bullets, and lead fishing weights.

One curious point: I found this article in the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, but not in the Anchorage paper. I guess it's too pro-Constitution and pro-people for the liberals who publish it.

Tough.

Nothing mentioned about minerals exploration, as far as I know. Dang it.

Padre, while this is good its also bad as many folk will destroy the land, with trash and disrespect to nature and other humans. I would oppose opening up more of Alaska. Funny how your Senator had to go to NM to find support. You scratch my back I scratch yours?? Can't both Senators sponsor the same bill.

Rob, it's all well & good to oppose more hunting land in Alaska, but the Fed owns half of the State. At what point should it belong to the people who live here?

And they are sponsoring the same bill; not quite sure I understand your question.

Hey....federal land is OUR land. We should be telling them what they can restrict or not. Federal lands should be open to all.

Radical!

Tewshooz - that's my point. It's not theirs; it's OURS. They're supposed to custodians, not owners.

Ed - you betcha! :)
