The Blessing of the Pets and Animals

A number of denominations hold an annual service wherein pets and other animals are blessed by the priest/rabbi/pastor.

In my experience, it can be a lovely time as pet owners brings their beloved four-legged (and often, finned) family members to church. It helps also if the pastor is an animal lover.

It can also be ... well, less than lovely when the above conditions don't apply. I'm sure you can imagine.

And then there are the critters which don't appreciate getting sprinkled:

This happens, too. You can trust me on this.

I worked in a pet grooming shop for a time. Cats don't like water. I bear the scars as proof. :)

I can't imagine why you'd say that, Vicki. :)

Heh. I have belonged to parishes that did that. Never took my cats. Because, well, cats. And I've had a couple that needed an exorcism more than a blessing, anyway. Because, well, cats.

PH, I've been asked tongue-in-cheek about exorcisms for cats. Cats, and certain parrots, macaws, and a few other exotic pets.

Cats... Moving targets... :-)

Cats are independent free spirits. They know how to fend for themselves and strike out when threatened. Kind of like our forefathers were. That is why I love them, even if they hate water.

NFO - I have a friend in Missouri who would cheerfully agree with you.

Tewshooz - never thought of it that way, but yes: I agree.

Ever try to give a chicken a bath? ..... NOT fun. :o(

Gracie, aka BAC (the Big A** Cat), doesn't like getting shot with the water gun for an infraction.
However...
If it's raining, she loves to try to get outside to play in the rain?!
WHO KNEW?

Rob - :)

Chickenmom - nope, never tried that. I always figured they got clean enough when it rained. Heh.

Guffaw - it's the same way with dogs. They get annoyed if you blow in their faces, but where do they want to sit when you take 'em for a ride?

Ha!

... hunh. I wonder if you can bless a cat with a water pistol? :)

Rev. Paul said...

Jenny, I doubt they feel blessed by it, but you can definitely squirt them at least once. After that, they disappear if they see the water pistol. Ask me how I know this.
