Southcentral Alaska was rocked by a strong and prolonged magnitude-7.1 earthquake early Sunday morning.
The quake struck 86 miles west-southwest of Anchor Point at 1:30 a.m. Alaska time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The Alaska Earthquake Center said it hit on the west side of Cook Inlet, about 65 miles west of the Kenai Peninsula town of Homer and about 160 miles southwest of Anchorage.
The quake knocked items off shelves and walls and shook buildings throughout the region. A series [several dozen - Ed.] of aftershocks followed, including a magnitude 4.5 that struck about two hours after the initial quake and could be felt again in Anchorage.Our power was off for about an hour. Small items were knocked off of shelves, and a few larger items as well. But nothing broke, so we dodged another bullet. If this 'quake hadn't been so deep, the damage caused could have been much greater.
There were no immediate reports of injuries. ... Power outages were reported in pockets all over Anchorage as well as elsewhere in Southcentral.
According to the paper, our local supermarket was still closed several hours after the event, due to major piles of broken bottles and other things which had collapsed into the aisles.
All things considered, we were fortunate. But I'd still rather have simply slept through the night without newsworthy events. :)

Just saw the report on Drudge - so glad no one was injured. I'll take a snowstorm over an earthquake any day!
Glad you are safe. Some of us remember the 1964 Good Friday quake. I was in the Army in Germany. One of my buddies was from Stewart. It was several days before he got mail from home letting him know all were well.
Chickenmom, I'm with you. When we get 2 or 3 feet of snow (not often, but it happens), we just sleep a little later. Don't have to get up & look for breakage.
WSF, thank you. We remember the '64 'quake, too. And I spent 4 years managing the mall that's built where that big hole in the famous picture is located. The largest '64 quake exhibit in Alaska is located in that building, now. But thanks to our very, very strict earthquake code, this wasn't much more than an inconvenience.
