New Router, No Worries

It was the router. Its replacement - same make and model - works as advertised.

It's quite a relief. That's all four family members without wifi for their various and sundry devices, for over 24 hours. Those with addiction to said things (like Younger Daughter - heh) had to go cold turkey. :)

That said, all is back to normal. And we, who aren't addicted at all (wink, wink) can go back to Netflix and watch Bones.

Having said all that, it's a bit disturbing that one can plop down $120 for a new device, and have it fail spectacularly right out of the box. It seems quality control isn't really a thing at Netgear.

Ah, well ... caveat emptor.

Glad you got it working! I found out in my old job that out of box failures happen more often than you'd think, but not enough to be the first suspect.

Thanks, Matt. I certainly tried everything else, first!

I would add "within the last 2-3 years."

It's not something that I'm happy to have to say, as my happy days of recommending Netgear in the certain knowledge that they would just work and keep on working go back to the introduction of the model DG834 - every telephone engineer I knew carried one in preference to the company issued "test modem".

Currently using a TP-Link TD-W9980 on FTTC; rock steady, no dropouts, excellent WiFi.

Netgear equipment in metal enclosures still seems to be rock solid, but I'm leery of any Netgear product in a plastic enclosure.

Ever since Cisco bought them, they've seemed to have gotten really cheep!

QC is in the toilet as they chase the $$$ to feed the CIsco kitty.

I'll keep that in mind, Bryn, for whenever this new one decides to stop. I hope that'll be a long time, but one never knows.

drjim, I haven't seen any metal-cased Netgear products outside of a commercial application, but that's good to know, too.

NFO, I'll look more closely at Arris or another competitor next time, if/when this one ever stops.

Glad you are back to the land of the electronically living!
Remember dial-up?
THERE, now you may feel grateful!

:-)

Guffaw, those of us who have reached a certain age (that ought to be correct enough) can't help but recall dial-up with a shudder. Most modern web pages won't even load at those speeds, now.

So yeah, thanks for that reminder. :/

Rev. Paul,

Nothing bought is ever guaranteed to work out of the box any more.
Glad you were able to get back up and running.

Lack of quality is a fact of life these days, Sandy; you're spot on. And thanks!
