The race is on. Iditarod frontrunner Mitch Seavey left Kaltag (Mile 633) just five minutes ahead of his son, defending champ Dallas, at 4:40 a.m. today.
From Kaltag, the racers are traveling 85 miles to Unalakleet, a welcoming, large village where the checkpoint hall is a former Post Office that always smells of frying bacon.

Those Seavey's seem to be a pretty tough, resourceful family.
These things tend to go in streaks - a racer will win several times in a half-dozen years, and then never win again. But they're red hot right now.
What a fascinating pieced of trivia about the checkpoint hall. Myself, I love the smell of frying bacon.
It's a great incentive to keep the mushers moving toward their town. At least, it would be for me.
