Why Do We Have the Iditarod Race?

Each year, mushers drive a pack of 16 dogs through the rough wilderness between Anchorage and Nome in honor of a famous Alaska medical emergency.

I first read about the diphtheria outbreak and the race to get the meds to the ill when I was about 12-13 in a book called Silver Chief, dog of the north. I think it was written by Jack London. His story was based on the original race. It had been in my grandparents bookcase. I enjoyed following the Iditarod when it was first run a few years later.

Thank you for the info, updates and memories :)

I think that is where I read it, too. I read all Jack London's books when I was growing up.

Hope you all have a blessed, safe weekend, Reverend.

Thanks Reverend. That was a splendid introduction. Makes the achievement even more impressive.

I'm glad it helped put things in perspective, TB. I hoped it would.
