God's Word for Thursday, 12/13/18

And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.
Matthew 2:4-6 KJV

When word of their inquiry got to Herod, he was terrified—and not Herod alone, but most of Jerusalem as well. Herod lost no time. He gathered all the high priests and religion scholars in the city together and asked, “Where is the Messiah supposed to be born?” They told him, “Bethlehem, Judah territory. The prophet Micah wrote it plainly: It’s you, Bethlehem, in Judah’s land, no longer bringing up the rear. From you will come the leader who will shepherd-rule my people, my Israel.”
Matthew 2:4-6 MSG

The thing that has always surprised me about these verses is that when asked, the religious leaders knew exactly where the Messiah was to born - yet no-one believed Scripture.

TB, I believe it's because they all expected the Messiah to arrive with great fanfare and a conquering army of angels to destroy the Roman legions. They failed to understand the passages about the sacrificial Lamb of God who must come first.
