Her son, an electrician, installed lights & a radiant heating panel in the outhouse for her. She turns the panel on from inside the cabin about 10 to 15 minutes before going out there, in winter. That'd be the weekend I frostnipped my hands because my buddy tossed me gloves good to fifteen below. And no, it's not quite as easy as it used to be.

Rob, it would be grim. Back in the early '80s, we lived in a mobile home in Iowa City (college years). January '81, it was -13 every day for a month. Our main waste line froze solid & we had to shower at the neighbor's house. And I had to spend a day on my back, under the trailer, insulating pipes & wrapping heat cord around things. Still took 4 days to thaw the sewer line. Of course, that was after I dug a trough through the 39" snowfall to get to the crawlspace. This weather is much colder than that was.Rev. It was -39* at 3:00 PM when I got there, and they were having dogsled races down the street. Next morning, I went to start the government vehicle I had picked up in Anchorage. I turned the key, and the engine just went"er..." The thing had a block heater, but no extension cord to plug it into the outlet in front of the room.
