2011 Iditarod Field Nearly Set

From the Iditarod website:

The 2011 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race field of entrants grew today (November 30, 2010), the last day for teams to sign up for the race. As of 5 p.m. Alaska Time the confirmed number of entrants stands at 59.  The last musher to sign up was 5 time Iditarod Champion Rick Swenson.

That number of entrants may still grow.  At least three other mushers have confirmed that they have already mailed in their 2011 entry packages.

This is going to be fun!

Yet another reason to be glad to have "met" an Alaskan blogger. I do love that Iditarod! Love dog racing in general, but it has kind of died out down here. Used to be we could go to races all winter. Now there is just one fellow that we see with his team down on the bike path. I have a couple of harnesses and we used to hitch the border collies up to the plastic toboggan and give the kids a ride around town. They were the envy of the neighborhood! lol

if I understand the numbers there will be around 62 entrants this year. That's a bit smaller field than in the past. (The number 72 pops into my head for 2010...but don't hold me to it.)

Looking forward to many long days of following THE Race on the internet. And I'll be rooting for the two mushers I met and spoke with this summer: Michelle Phillips and that Miracle Man, Lance MacKey.
