UPDATED Earthquake, Air Force & Coast Guard

Five-foot tsunami waves from Japan's 8.9-magnitude 'quake have hit the far western Aleutian islands. The authoritehs issued a tsunami warning for the southern coasts of islands from 135 miles west of Adak (which is 1325 miles WSW of Anchorage) to Attu, at the end of the chain. That makes the danger area between 1500 to 2000 miles west of Anchorage.

There are airmen and coast guardsmen (and women, of course) in the western Aleutians, so let's not forget them while praying for Japan, Hawaii, and west coast of the States. Those of us on the Alaskan mainland are in no danger.

UPDATE: The quake in Japan has triggered a series of smaller 'quakes along the western Aleutians, mostly in the area described above.  The largest (so far) is only a 4.38.  Tsunami waves out there are in the 1-meter range, although some up to 5 feet are expected. Along Alaska's southern coast, the surge is in the 1-foot range, give or take.

Saw elsewhere that the Oregon coast got hit pretty hard. Some small harbors in particular were heavily damaged. Depoe Bay for one.
