Alaska Protests Proposed F-16 Squadron Move from Fairbanks to Anchorage

The mayors of Fairbanks and Anchorage have filed formal objections to the Air Force's plan to move a squad of F-16s from Eielson AFB in Fairbanks to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage.

Fairbanks would lose around 1,000 jobs, and Anchorage has two complaints. Increased noise levels in its Mountain View neighborhood nearest the base are a major concern, and there's something else: a shortage of some 150 housing units that would be needed.

Governor Sean Parnell is expected to make a statement opposing the move, as well.
