The Iditarod Trail Race, a sled dog race of some 1150 miles, from Willow to Nome, is to start on Saturday.
Those who are responsible for grooming the trail are having an unusual problem: parts of the trail are literally missing - buried under deep snow.
UPDATE: now those trailbreakers are STUCK in a high mountain pass, trapped by snow.
I know there have been times when they've rerouted the race because of a lack of snow, but has it ever been rerouted because of too much snow?
ReplyDeleteNot in recent times; the organizers have two routes, and they use the southern route when the northern way gets a little too much winter.
ReplyDeleteRecently, I believe they've simply been alternating between the two. This year may be different.
The groomers are getting stuck in the snow?!? Those are the wide tracked vehicles with the drags to smooth out the trail. They are used on ski slopes all over the place. And there's too much snow for them?
ReplyDeleteThat reminds me of the stories out fo Glacier national Park from last spring/early summer. THe plows/bulldozers were having a tough time clearing Going To The Sun Road because of all the snow. Avalanches would fill the day's work as soon as the men left. Some guys quit when they realized they were not on the road while dumping snow over the edge but were on the snow pack itself and could have become the next avalanche.
Aah, GLobal Warming...those were the good old days. All ten of 'em.
"All ten of 'em."
