Friday News Round-Up

Good morning. It's finally raining a bit, with the temp around 44 degrees. We desperately need the rain; I only hope what we receive will be enough to quell the risk of fires for a time.

Here are a few of the local headlines, since the MSM typically ignores Alaska unless it's to bash Sarah Palin and/or her family:

MAJOR BREAKING NEWS ALERT!!!!! Bristol Palin got her diploma from Wasilla High School last night. I figured all the main-stream kool-ade drinkers would wanta know. Now they can shut up & get a life. In fact, here's a tip: maybe they could try reporting actual news for a change.

* The wildfire in the Homer area has now consumed 1,200 acres, and several homes. Many more are threatened, but the expansion has slowed, and firefighters are starting to make some headway in containing the blaze.

* A woman in Fairbanks has been charged with letting her 7-year-old son act as her designated driver ... while she passed out, drunk, next to him in the car. He drove the half-mile to their home without hitting anything. Amazing.

* The Daily Noise ... er, News has weighed in on the bears-in-town issue with a surprisingly reasonable opinion. Read their editorial here.

* * * * *

The national story about Rep. Nancy Pelosi has long since become an embarassment. Her slanderous attack on the CIA was ill-considered, and the press corps smells blood in the water. Oh, and Nancy? It's not a good idea to tick off the CIA: they don't play by your rules.

Our days continue to grow longer. Usable daylight is now from 4 a.m. to nearly midnight. I love it!

That's my two cents' worth for this morning. Y'all have a great day!

4 AM to Midnight?!! man, I would really have difficulty sleeping under those conditions. I'm pretty much a dusk-to-dawn sort of guy which is why winter down here is gets to be pretty tough. Can't imagine what it would be like up your neck of the woods.

In another month, we'll have no night at all; just 90 minutes or so of dusk before it gets bright again. That 90-minute spread occurs between about 1:30 and 3:00 a.m.

After all, there has to be some compensation for all those months of winter!

Thanks, Deedee! That was taken downtown on 5th Avenue, in front of the Catholic church.
