Friday Wrap-Up

Good morning! Here's a summary of events in the Alaska & Anchorage news:

The wildfire near McGrath is over 40% contained, and is burning away from the town.
Motorists on the Glenn Highway north of Anchorage called State troopers to report moose calves in the back of a pickup truck. Troopers responded & pulled the modern-day rustlers over, finding two calves in the back. And you thought the Old West spirit was dead!

An argument apparently got out of hand in an unusual way (for Anchorage) yesterday, as a gunman opened fire in a crowded parking lot, fatally shooting an acquaintance who was seated in a parked SUV outside the Sports Authority. Other shoppers ran and ducked for cover; police have recovered the getaway car, but not the shooter. If the shooting had happened at the other end of the parking lot, in front of the Sportsman's Warehouse, I suspect the shooter would have been held at gunpoint, awaiting police. Those customers are packin'. Just saying.

It appears that the State legislators have enough votes to override Gov. Palin's veto of the stimulus funds for "energy cost relief." Apparently those in favor have forgotten that they passed a state sovereignty resolution earlier this year.

Gas prices have risen to $2.67/gallon for regular, here in Anchorage. Of course they have; after all, it's summer and people might be tempted to drive their cars.

That's enough for now. Thanks for coming by & taking a look. Have a great Friday!

The NC State Supreme Court is forcing the Governor there to go to Washington despite his very logical reasons for refusing the "stimulus" money. Looks like your state legislators arent; the only ones with their heads up their butts.

Gas prices here in PA are only about a nickle cheaper than out your way. Looks like I'll have to start saving some $$ if I plan to visit in '10. (And I do!)

What in tarnation is someone going to do with two moose calfs that look like they're hardly weaned? If you bottle feed the buggers til they're a supply of serious meat it would cost you a fortune. (Unless, of course, you've got a freshened milk cow on stand by.) And two little ones like that are hardly a mouth full. Can't see 'em as pets.

Well, the Legislature here has to vote to overturn the veto; then the Gov. has to refuse to sign; then the legislators can appeal to a court. Have to let the farce run its course before it's "ripe for appeal." A bunch of maroons, the lot of 'em.

It's hard to say where gas prices will be by the time you guys toodle this way, but it would be nice to meet you ... hint, hint.

Re: the moose, the calves had apparently been orphaned, and the woman driving them out of town told police she was taking them to a Mat-Su reindeer farm to live out their lives - according to the local paper.
