Protesting the Feds on Fifth Avenue, Anchorage

"Back outside, the protesters were clearing out. I ran into Cora Hoff who was having a cigarette. She came in from Big Lake in part because she was worried about the building codes, but also because she has a problem with federal spending.

She didn’t like handouts, food stamps and welfare and free health insurance for pregnant women who don’t work. The government should stay out of people’s lives and leave states alone and teach personal responsibility, she told me.

But what would Alaska’s economy look like without federal funds? She was getting a little frustrated with me.

“Like it did in the old days,” she said finally."

Real Alaskans - not the enviro-weenies from Oregon and California - speak out. Read the rest here.

If the federal government only took the money it needed to perform its constitutionally mandated functions there would be a hell of a lot more kept in state and the states would be one heck of a lot better off financially. Especially a state as rich in natural resources as Alaska.

If states fail to protest the fed's takings (taxes), fail to develope their own resources (think of California's ban on offshore drilling), promote an attitude among their citzenry that absolves them from personal repsonsibility, then the states deserve to fail.
