An Afternoon at Merrill Field

I am a lucky man. I got to spend my afternoon with a good friend, making another friend, and looking at all manner of small (and some not-so-small) aircraft. Up close & personal, hands-on, the way it oughta be.

We went to Merrill Field, Anchorage's first commercial airport, and looked at planes like these:

LOTS of planes like these -

and several amphibious craft, such as this -
Got really close to this one

Met a new friend (John), a long-time Alaskan who's been to see the varmint, and lived to tell the tales ... many tales, and all worth hearing.

It doesn't get any better than this.

@BB - "been to see the varmint" means someone who's gone ahead to check out something suspicious/unknown/dangerous/whatever, and lived to tell the tale. Just an old colloquialism which probably dates back to the fur trade era, or earlier.
