In a copyright story in today's Anchorage Daily News:
"A wolf grabbed a dog by the nape of its neck Sunday on Fort Richardson [eastern edge of Anchorage .. Paul] but released the pet when its owners ran toward it, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
...
"The encounter took place in midafternoon Sunday when two people were jogging with three dogs a few miles into the trail and one of the animals, said to be a pointer-retriever mix, fell behind the group, Bartley said.
"The owners, who were not immediately identified, heard a yelp and turned around to see the dog being carried in the wolf's jaws, he said. The people rushed the wolf, which then dropped the dog but didn't flee, he said."

Wonder what would have happened if it were one of the people at the end of the line instead of the dog.
That's a good questions. Wolves chased a jogger last summer, in that same area, after having attacked and killed a couple of dogs. I don't recall, now, what made them stop chasing the jogger.
We have a few touchy-feely types, here, that want to make nice & befriend the wolves, but most folks are volunteering to start hunting.
"action against the jogger"? The jogger was trying to protect the dog and themselves - what did they do wrong?
According to the article, "The joggers had not signed in as required for their trip on base and also apparently did not have their dogs on leashes, in violation of base policy, Army spokesman Bob Hall said."
Short version: they were on the grounds of Fort Richardson (army base) & didn't follow the bureaucratic procedures for using the trail.
