Mt. Redoubt - the Continuing Story

I haven't mentioned our old friend, Mt. Redoubt, in awhile.

There haven't been any major eruptions in several weeks, but it's not finished.

Here's the latest from the Alaska Volcano Observatory:

2009-05-18 15:44:04 The 2009 eruption of Redoubt continues. Webcam views today show continued steaming from the summit crater. Occasional rockfalls down the steep sides of the lava dome are also continuing, often generating diffuse, low-level ash clouds at the summit. Seismicity remains low, but is above background levels.

This picture was taken about 15 minutes ago (4:10 pm, AK time).

I fully expect Redoubt to keep smoking and ashing long enough that I've already written off clamming in Polly Creek this summer. On the other hand, all the free and widely distributed fertilizer it, ah, gifted us with means the blueberries ought to be excellent this year!

I suspect there will be LOTS of good eating from various berry patches and gardens, this year. Yum!

Volcanic ash is such a hinderance and a blessing here.

I have a feeling next year we are going to have a GREEN summer as it blew to close to break up to do anything for this summer.

Rev. wait till next summer. When Spur went off and covered areas like Anchorage, that summer was nice and warm like this one. The summer after was like this as well BUT man it was green and everything grew (berries to veggie) like you wouldn't believe!

Just hope you guys are OK up there. I had an uncle who lived near Mount St. Helenes, and it was pretty miserable for him.

I can't speak for the Rev. But I am use to it, it is annoying but it isn't near us to cause death. This happens about 4-10 years.

My next prediction on what Volcano will blow around cook inlet.... Spur.

Up is right; Mt. Redoubt is 100 miles south/southwest of Anchorage, so the only danger is from ash and/or smoke (in the case of a really BIG eruption). No real danger to life; just to equipment (motors, engines, paint jobs, etc).

And Up - Mt. Spurr is a safe guess, since it erupted a couple of years after Redoubt the last time, too.

On the other hand, there have been so many 'quakes near Kodiak that another eruption at Augustine or Iliamna wouldn't surprise me, either.

Rev.. Augustine AND Spurr have both been kind of active when Redoubt first erupted.

Why do I say Spurr though? Because Augustine burped about 4 years ago (around winter of 2005?) and I don't think it has enough pressure.. yet. Spurr is next in line.
