Government at its best is a necessary evil, and at its worst, an intolerant one.
~ Thomas Paine
A little government and a little luck are necessary in life, but only a fool trusts either of them.
~ P. J. O’Rourke
The single most exciting thing you encounter in government is competence, because it’s so rare.
~ Daniel Patrick Moynihan
When important issues affecting the life of an individual are decided by somebody else, it makes no difference to the individual whether that somebody else is a king, a dictator, or society at large.

I love the quotes you share - especially the Taggart quote today!
Thank you, DP. I have a collection of nearly 500 conservative and/or libertarian quotes; the hardest part is picking "just a few" to share each time.
Rev,
Once again you post something that I agree with and smile when I read with the inward assurance that I have just found a little bit more truth.
The one I found most intresting was the one by Thomas Paine. It seems that those who profess tolerance are the least likely at times to accept it. Recently this was again placed before nme with regards to CA's prop 8. The Gay and Lesbian community says that we need to be tolerant of them but they are not tolerant of my religious beliefs at all. They say my beliefs are, evil, wrong, bigoted and old fashioned. This seems the very model of intolerance.
With regards to tolerance of ideas we need to realize that we can still get along with people despite having diffrent ideas without falling into name calling. Christians and Jews may not have always gotten along but we do a pretty good job of it now despite their being a huge schism between the two beliefs.
If in religious dialouge we can be tolerant by following a few simple steps we should be able to be truly tolerant of others.
Government does not take this stance. Government embraces Atheism in our schools versus the ideals we were founded on. Those in Government seem to be intolerant of any views but their own.
Being tolerant does not mean I condone someones actions as correct it just means that I will listen to them and expect them to listen to me without us resorting to finding giant clubs and hitting eachother till only one is left standing.
I've rambled more than a bit, sorry for that Rev. but things were just coming to mind.
Lucky, you're always free to speak your mind here. And I agree that we are seeing the intolerance of that "worst" government in the daily news.
Rev,
Did you get the chance to look at the video I posted of the 12 year old speaking out about her views on abortion that I posted on my blog?
Lucky - I did. I suspect she had some help putting the script together, but that in no way detracts from the impact of what she said. It was VERY well delivered. She is to be commended for speaking out like that.
