Floatplane Crash at Lake Hood, Pt. 2

Last week I posted about a DeHavilland Beaver which crashed during take-off from Lake Hood, here in Anchorage. Here's the video, in HD.

Unbelievable footage! It looks like the plane was trying to take off in a cross wind and even a scardy cat like me knows that is no-no unless you've got a lot more water than he seemed to have. Is that a channel he's heading for--sort of a canal/runway? If so, the wind blew him off course and the pilot had little chance to get the Beaver airborne. Darn shame!

You're exactly correct. The pilot stated, in the newspaper account, that a gust of wing blew him toward his left, and he simply couldn't correct his course.

Lake Hood has several "fingers" that are essentially long, dead-end canals. That's where the pilot was headed.

One goes directly along the edge of a parking lot, which is where the photographer was standing. We've been there many times, but never with that much excitement!
