Announcing the first Alaskan Conservative Bloggers blogmeet, tentatively scheduled for July 15 at the Moose's Tooth. Please contact me if you're interested in attending (manager208 AT gmail DOT com).
There are some random thoughts bumping around the brain pan this morning. Here are a few:
- With NoKo threatening the U.S. (and other places) with missiles, it occurs to me that the Trans-Alaska Pipeline is a huge target. A strike near the North Slope could severely impair the nation's energy supply. Still think it's okay for the current administration to cut back on missile defense? Hawaii, Alaska, and the entire left coast would disagree.
- Speaking of oil: the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco ordered Exxon Mobil Corp. to pay roughly $1 billion to Alaska Natives, fishermen, business owners and others harmed by the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill in Prince William Sound. We'll see if they actually pay anything, this time. So far, they've dribble a few pennies to those still surviving, while instantly appealing every decision, and continuing to insist the penalty be reduced.
- Gov. Sarah Palin says she accepts David Letterman's apology for the joke about her daughter. As I pointed out yesterday, his speech - however offensive - is protected by the First Amendment. What he said is his responsibility. He may just be discovering that fact, to his regret. My personal guess is that he's ticked off about having to apologize; that CBS forced him to do so, and that he still doesn't think he did anything wrong.
- Gov. Sarah Palin's supporters are holding a Web-a-thon to raise money for her legal defense fund. Organizers of Conservatives4Palin say they hope to raise more than $500,000 in a week.
Palin has said she has amassed more than that in legal fees while fighting ethics complaints. She also incurred legal fees during last fall's Troopergate investigation into her firing of Alaska's public safety commissioner. If you're interested in helping, please go to http://www.conservatives4palin.com/ to find out more.
That's all I have, for now. Thanks for stopping by!
