Friday Odds and Ends

The temps across town stayed around 10 degrees today, while it snowed lightly. It's up to 12 now, but there's a nice little wind blowing and the wind chill is around zero. If this keeps up, I'll have to put away my vest and start wearing a jacket.

My youngest baked a banana cake yesterday, and I see that only three pieces are left. Not much of a surprise, really; it's pretty good, as you might imagine. The thick, creamy whipped banana frosting isn't bad, either.

Maybe I need to go grab another piece, 'cause you never know when zombies will scarf up the remainder.

In local news the, um, nutjob who murdered a local college student and wounded two other strangers in 2007, was sentenced to 309 years in prison. He was convicted last year of murdering his father with a machete and hacking at his father's fiance in a suburb, before coming to Anchorage to continue the senseless rampage.

A jury found him guilty in April of guilty of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, robbery, assault, vehicle theft and eluding police. The jury acquitted him on a charge that he attempted to shoot one of the police officers who arrested him..

The Arctic Valley Ski Area will be open again this year. Located on the northeastern edge of Anchorage, it was not expected to reopen after last season. Local skiers will be happy.

On the science front, I read that NASA reports it did find water in that crater where it crashed two rockets earlier this year. Heinlein fans may be tempted to commence packing, but it might be a bit soon to plan your lunar colony.

Nevertheless, the presence of water there means that eventual colonization could be possible.

Y'all have a GREAT Friday night. Thanks for stopping by.

It's been in the 50's and 60's here. That's been great for getting the house ready to sell and scouting out land further out to buy, but the nights are getting cold. I bought a heated mattress pad yesterday. Now THAT's nice.
