Joy in Mudville

There's bad news, but then there's good news.

Bad:
The unemployment rate among young adults in Anchorage, as reported recently by the local newspaper, is about 24 percent*.

Good:
My grown daughter finally landed a job interview today, and was offered a job on the spot. She starts tomorrow. Happy happy!

* It's the only segment of the workforce that's so bad; the rest are fairly flat - not a lot of new jobs, but no major lay-offs, either. We're reasonably well insulated from the Lower 48 market in that regard. A local economist likened it to being in a boat, off-shore, watching the coastline burn. Rather graphic, that, but fairly accurate.

Well of course she did. With parents like you two, I imagine she was savvy, articulate and has a great work ethic.

That's rarer now than you think with parents thinking buying kids "things" and relaxing the rules so they can be "friends" turns out a good adult.

You deserve to be proud.

Real-life success stories are out there in the midst of seriously depressing statistics. Good for her.

Good for her!

I was going to make a comment about Alaska being so insulated from the lower forty-eight that I'll need a passport to get in and out of the state, but then realized that, since I'm arriving by land, that's true!
