Monday Afternoon: Alaska News at a Glance

Excerpt: Anchorage police have arrested a 16-year-old boy in connection with two pipe bombs and an improvised grenade allegedly found in his backpack at his home.

The unnamed youth has been charged with one count of misconduct involving weapons, third degree, and misconduct involving a controlled substance, sixth degree, police said. A small quantity of marijuana was discovered in his possession, police said.

The teen, a student at West High School, has possessed the explosive devices on school grounds, police said.

Excerpt: The Seward Highway was reopened about 2 p.m. Saturday at Mile 21, roughly 24 hours after an avalanche blocked traffic in both directions.

The closure stranded motorists in Seward and blocked access to the city. The highway was blocked south of Crown Point and north of the Snow River Crossing -- about 17 miles south of the Sterling and Seward Highway junction, said Transportation Department spokesman Roger Wetherell.

The state used artillery to loosen hazardous snow and prevent more avalanches in the area this morning.

Great stories in the article on the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame.

If Lance Mackey pulls of a fifth consecutive Quest and a fourth consecutive Iditarod he and his team should be cast in bronze...no make that gold. The man has a well oiled machine at his command and the the ability to have fun with it/them.
