The Morning After The Night Before

It's zero outside, with a wind chill of -14, gusting to -20. It's one of those days when you can tell the Alaskans from the visitors: we run around in just a sweater or vest (unless we're planning on being outside for quite awhile), and they're in "arctic expedition" gear, hoods up, and oversized mittens on.

By the time I cleared the frost from my truck this morning, I was beginning to wish I hadn't lost my gloves. Oh well, that's what pockets are for. But if it gets any windier, I'll have to button up my coat. I might even go shopping for new gloves ... tomorrow. It's supposed to warm up into the teens, with more snow on the way.

We spent last night at the Hotel Captain Cook in downtown Anchorage. My wife's company had its annual holiday party, which she played a major role in planning (yes, I'm bragging on my wife). It was a smashing success, judging by the comments.

The Captain Cook is one of those swanky places where the wait staff wears tuxes. I should mention that she worked for the president of the hotel for five years, and when the staff found out she was involved in this party, they pulled out all the stops. Nice. The banquet was beef tenderloin and
herb-encrusted halibut ... and so on. It was well-received, and if anyone left there without a full meal & all the dessert they wanted, it's their own fault.

I volunteered as the party photographer & got to play with the company's new camera - a 12.1 megapixel Nikon DSLR. It was nice, too, and took great pics in the low-light ballroom.

Anyway, it's cold, I'm tired, my back still hurts, and that's enough for now. Have a great weekend, friends, and thanks for stopping by.

Its funny how long it takes to acclimate to cold. I spent three yrs. in Hawaii and came home one October, people where in shorts, I was looking for a coat. Now at -30 i still have my pickup window down most of the time.

Sounds like you had a pretty good time at the party--and a great meal!

Temperatures are relative. They say you can get used to anything over time. II'm afraid I'd have to have one of those arctic parkas if I were to face -20 for a couple of weeks. Then again, the lack of sun light would have me climbing the walls long before I froze to death.
