Quotes of the Day, 1/19/10

The very purpose of a Bill of Rights was to withdraw certain subjects from the vicissitudes of political controversy. One's right to life, liberty and property, to free speech, a free press, freedom of worship and assembly may not be submitted to vote; they depend on no elections.

~ Robert H. Jackson (1892-1954), U.S. Supreme Court Justice, West Virginia Board of Education vs. Barnette, 1943

At the heart of western freedom and democracy is the belief that the individual man … is the touchstone of value, and all society, groups, the state, exist for his benefit. Therefore the enlargement of liberty for individual human beings must be the supreme goal and abiding practice of any western society.

~ Robert F. Kennedy (1925-1968), U.S. Senator, Speech, University of Capetown, 6/6/66

If by the mere force of numbers a majority should deprive a minority of any clearly written constitutional right, it might, in a moral point of view, justify revolution.

~ Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), First Inaugural Address, 4 March 1861

We can simplify the debate. Obama said community interests are more important than are individual interests, and in this we find the differences between tyranny of the elite few over the many and individual freedom. There are only those two sides. Obama relates to the oldest, longest-running political system in the world, against the newest formed almost 400 years ago and proven worthy of a free people since, in America only.
