Iron Dog Race Reaches the Coast

This year's torn up, partially-melted trail is taking its toll on the racers. Excerpt:

In a race so rugged that experience usually pays the ultimate dividend, a surprising number of fresh faces are bunched up at the front of the pack in this year's Iron Dog, the world's longest and toughest snowmachine race.

Monday's carnage on the Iron Dog trail saw seven teams drop out of the race, including normal front-runners Todd Palin of Wasilla and Scott Davis of Soldotna as well as Marc McKenna of Anchorage and Dusty VanMeter of Soldotna. Between them, the four racers own 15 Iron Dog titles.

That left just 22 teams still in the race.

Damn near as dangerous as driving on the Dan Ryan in Chicago... LOL. Good luck to the teams still in it!
