A Day at the (Iditarod) Race

I just spent four hours freezing - it's an Alaskan tradition. As one old-timer told me at the first Iditarod I attended, "You haven't been to the Iditarod if you haven't frozen your @$$ off."

In that case, I've been there a number of times, and did it again today. I have 170+ photos to go through, but here's a teaser. It's Lance Mackey, defending champion, trying for his fourth consecutive win.

That's the dang problem with this race...too many mushers to root for. I wnat to see them all do well, take good care of their dogs, and finish. Finishing is a victory unto itself.

Oh, and unlike watching the *spit* Yankees win their umpteenth World Series, I certainly would cheer Lance for winning his fourth consecutive race or Rick Swenson his sixth overall.

Damn, I miss seeing Susan Butcher in the field. May she be enjoying her dogs and the view from Up There, RIP. Speaking of which, I believe tomorrow is Susan Butcher Day in Alaska.
