Iditarod: the Official Start

And ... they're off! Or will be in about 3 minutes, as I begin this post. The first ten mushers to leave the line will be:

1 Linwood Fiedler OUT OF Willow 03/07 14:00
2 Cim Smyth OUT OF Willow 03/07 14:02
3 Wattie McDonald (r*) OUT OF Willow 03/07 14:04
4 Zoya DeNure OUT OF Willow 03/07 14:06
5 Jessie Royer OUT OF Willow 03/07 14:08
6 Paul Gebhardt OUT OF Willow 03/07 14:10
7 John Baker OUT OF Willow 03/07 14:12
8 Ray Redington Jr OUT OF Willow 03/07 14:14
9 Justin Savidis (r) OUT OF Willow 03/07 14:16
10 Blake Freking OUT OF Willow 03/07 14:18

*r = rookie

As you see, they leave at two-minute intervals. The mushers and their teams are ready; the volunteers are all at their assigned posts along the trail. It's going to be a GREAT race this year.

The teams will leave Willow Lake and head toward the Big Susitna River, toward Yentna, and on into the teeth of North America’s largest mountain range, The Alaska Range. Denali, known to most Outsiders at Mt. McKinley, is the tallest peak in the Alaska Range, as well as in North America at 20,322 feet. At four miles high, its upper half is visible from Anchorage, some 125 miles to the south/southeast.

It's 18 degrees and mostly sunny in Willow. This is going to be fun.

Are those dogs having as much fun s they look like they are?

They always look so happy in their work. Is that an illusion?
Anthropomorphism?

Larry, they LOVE to run. The real eye-opener is how they behave once they're in harness & near the starting line. They struggle and strain to run ahead, and the mushers have a deadman-style anchor in the snow to keep them from hitting the trail prematurely. Some of them are trying so hard to run that they actually leap straight up into the air in an attempt to get going. They really do love it!

Just love this!! If Hootie was bigger he'd want to be a sled dog too. Thank you for keeping us dogs apprised of what's going on with the Iditarod.
