MoBro, my sometimes co-author here, had an exciting day: there was a high-speed chase and shoot-out on the highway near his home. The suspect apparently decided to commit suicide-by-cop, and after three of his tires were flattened by spike strips, did just that.
In Alaska news, 23-year-old Dallas Seavey has taken the lead in the Iditarod, and is trying to become the youngest winner ever. (His father, Mitch Seavey, won in 2004.) Rick Swenson, the only five-time winner, took his first victory at 24. There's a neat story about his team of talented pooches, too; read it all here. Here's an excerpt:
And one more thing: I was asked recently what we do with "all that Alaskan snow". See for yourself; I have two more piles the same size, at other corners of the lot.Even though he topped the leader board Thursday morning, Dallas is in the middle of his mandatory 24-hour rest. When he comes off it, he should be about seven hours behind Jeff King, who took his rest early and is moving like a runaway freight train.

Sorry I haven't commented much. A lot of overtime lately. If not for saved posts they probably would have sent out a dog team looking for me.
LOVE the new header. And always, keeping up with the life up north. I hope TYD tries the boxty recipe. Two coworkers are going to a try this weekend.
Looking at the leader board and it appears that young Dallas might well have to chase down more than Old Mr. King. Mitch Seavey (his dad) and Lance Mackey will be out there in front of him unless they hang back for some reason. Both have already done their 24 and arrived in Cripple shortly after King.
Brigid - yes, we bought the ingredients last night. Penzey's isn't available here, so that's the only thing we had to compromise on. She's giving it a go on Saturday.
Joated - I think the newspaper report to which I linked was speaking "evangelastically" regarding Dallas' chance of keeping the lead. There are several veterans, as you noted, who will be VERY tough to beat.
Where do you put the snow when you run out of room? lol
See Ya.
I'm not a news watcher but my mother insists. I saw that story on the news in St. Louis. *sigh* We are better off with one less criminal in the world, but I feel sorry for the cops that had to be the ones to take him out.
That snow pile pic looks like most of our parking lots in the middle of winter. Now they are down to tiny little hills, but after a few heavy snows, they do look like that. Also at intersections and parking lot entrances, they bring in heavy scooping equipment and trucks and take away the snow so people can see around corners and when pulling out onto the street.
