"Bear Man" Gets Fine; No Jail Time

From the Daily News:
PALMER -- Charlie Vandergaw, the "Bear Man" of the Mat-Su, was fined $20,000 on Thursday but will serve no jail time after pleading guilty to eight charges of illegally feeding bears.

Vandergaw, who for 20 years lured, fed and coexisted with black and grizzly bears at his remote Yentna River cabin, pleaded guilty last week to the misdemeanor charges.

...
Vandergaw was known for living in close interaction with the bears, which roamed his property and often entered his home. Photographs show him and visitors playing with and petting the animals.

"I've had a storybook existence," Vandergaw said.

Right - that would be the story about the man who was lunch for Br'er Bear. Click the link to read the crazy.

Ya know, I really have no problem with him putting himself in danger like this. If he has a death wish, so be it. But he has convinced others that it was safe to be around "his bears", and you know that some other dolt is going to think they can go "tame the wild Grizzly" as well, and when they get mauled, they are going to blame him. Ugh, stupid people.

Now that these bears of his have learned that humans are harmless, what happens when some poor schlub comes by and doesn't offer something fro them to eat...besides him/herself? "Idiot" is too kind and gentle a word for this man.

*sigh* It's one thing for him to put himself in danger - quite another for him to teach bears that humans will feed them. What a moron. But then we knew that already... Fairy tale existence??? Good grief! Let me guess - he's a liberal.
