I'm a lucky guy; I got to spend half of the day with Joated and his wife, who drove to Alaska with a caravan of Good Sam Club RVers.
There was a high overcast and it was misting a bit, when I picked them up from the RV park on the northeast side of Anchorage. I decided to first show them the entire Anchorage area, from the overlook at Flattop Mountain.
Mt. Redoubt
In a rare bit of good fortune, it was clear to the west & southwest, and all the mountains along the west side of the Cook Inlet were gleaming in bright sun. Three of our active volcanoes were visible: Mt. Spur, 75 miles to the west, last erupted in 1992. There was Mt. Redoubt, which erupted last year, 100 miles southwest; and Mt. Iliamna, about 135 miles southwest. It last erupted about 20 years ago,
also.
Mt. Iliamna
Mt. Spurr (tallest peak on the left end) and the Tordrillo Mtns.
From there we drove south to Beluga Point (no whales, darn it), and along Turnagain Arm to Girdwood. We ate lunch at Maxine's, a charmingly eclectic bistro, where the food was very good.
We came back into town past Potter Marsh, where there were a number of birds ... most of them seagulls, but Terry spotted a couple of arctic terns and some geese.
It was a pleasure; I hope they have good memories of it. They also presented me with a container of pure maple syrup from Hills State Park in Pennsylvania, with suggestions that Younger Daughter should use it for experimentation in cooking. YD grabbed it and announced she's making pancakes in the morning. A win-win, all 'round.
