In this case, it is quite unfortunate.
But in other cases - why is it adults see moose and want to say, "Here kitty kitty?"
You're quite right. Tourists & relatively-new residents alike see the moose (we have 1200 living in town) and go running toward it with a camera.
Natives and other long-time Alaskans see lunch.
