A Note to Readers of "The Outside Job"

In chapter 6, I described the "Talkeetna Tower". This is a real structure; here is a picture, followed by an explanation of its nature, courtesy of the Talkeetna Chamber of Commerce.

"That structure brings out a lot of questions. That is a personal structure that the owner drew the concept of, then had built.  He said that his idea came from seeing different architecture in Asia. The structure's design was made up, as you have described (a series of cupolas stacked atop each other - Ed.), building up from a larger based to the tallest and final viewing room on the top that is accessed via stairs. This structure is not used as a residence. The owner told me he has windows on the top level on all sides that open allowing amazing views and air circulation. This private structure is on his family homestead, visible along the [Glen] Parks Highway [but can only be] seen at one point, going one direction."

Thanks! I've flown over that and circled around no few times over the years, wondering why it was built, but never been quite curious enough to go look it up once I'd landed. I find it very amusing that the answer is the same as most Alaskan things: Because the owner wanted to, so he did.

Pretty neat. I bet he had a heck of a time getting the building permit. Or did he even bother?

There's no permit required - unincorporated territory with no building code. They rely on the banks to require commercial inspections prior to making loans.
