Ashamed of America?

Or rather, ashamed to be an American? I received this via e-mail, regarding my post here. I don't know that I agree with every single thing my correspondent said, but I understand why it was said. Presented for your consideration:

Ashamed to be an American

never thought I would say that but I am

just a guy from the Midwest that grew up with a set of values that have been trashed and forgotten

remember history class

tea parties
revolutionary war over taxation without representation

lets look back a ways in recent history

lets tax all America with a health care bill

way back when, when this country was founded if you were sick or hurt you went to the Dr.

if you had no money you paid in chickens, hams, eggs, etc.  but YOU DID NOT COUNT ON YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS TO SUPPORT YOU!!!!!

so where are we now ... stuck with a society that doesn't seem to care, I find NO REASON TO CELEBRATE  the trampling of our constitution, the SHAME of our Presidency, and the FALSEHOOD of our Congress and Senate.

So on this fourth of July 2011 I hang my head in shame I refuse to fly the American flag that our forefathers died to keep free, and am ashamed of the court system

Where does that leave us?

I don't know but this is NOT the America I was proud of this is NOT the America I was raised to respect and love.

WE acknowledge foreign languages and religions but kick to the curb our GOD fearing values in exchange for tattoos, piercing's, and perverted sex.

Many of us have fathers, sons and daughters, that have died (yes that's right DIED) to keep America free and I see around me celebrations and wasting of money in the worst economy in my lifetime... Our friends and neighbors are suffering but we take collections for foreign countries?

I have not been so embarrassed since some one got on their knees in front of a wax statue of Bill Clinton!!!!!

It's worse now.

No respect for our Presidency. ( come on now at least wear a tie)....No respect for our Flag. ( let's not forget to put our hands over our heart or at least remove a cap) during the National anthem.  But wait let's bow to a foreign king?

if what is happening today happened in 1776 you ask yourself what would have happened.

We fought a war over tea?

that being said

I was just venting Paul not at you but with you I don't feel very independent today, just oppressed, and saddened and ashamed that our great country could come to this even though the majority of our citizenry has cried foul, no one has stepped to the fore to stop it....

I think it goes back to the secularization of our society. People are going to worship a god, even when they deny they do, and America has slid into worship of the individual self. It's so easy for slogans such as "Everybody has their own truth" to gain ground while hiding fallacies in logic a mile wide. But it feels good so it becomes a common truism. That isn't true.

Rev. Paul,

Your friend has accurately summed up the situation. Now all he needs to do is discover that he himself has the power to start doing something about it. If not him, then who? If not now, then when?

Best regards,
PolyKahr

While I will freely admit there are many things going on in this country that I dislike intensely. I will also say I would far rather live here than anywhere else.

My question back would be - Why bother to look for hope when all you can see is the bad?

There's no point in even asking.

I just "unfollowed" a travel blogger the other day on twitter... why? Because he pointed to an article about police brutality that was in a newspaper (I think in Ohio) and said "This is why I don't want to live in America anymore".

Well, screw that! If I thought it would make the least impression I would have said... Yeah dumbass - the country you are currently sitting in just doesn't publish these stories so the police can do it without anyone being the wiser. That's what makes you feel better!

It's just sooooo much easier to complain that it's all going down the drain isn't it. We're wired that way as humans - look for the bad so you can avoid it. But when you let the bad overwhelm and forget the good - then there's no point in anyone trying to say something positive because the mind has already been made up - it's a bad evil place and anyone who says otherwise if Pollyanna and an idiot to boot.

So there you go - I'm an idiot. Attitude is everything! LOL.

I too understand your commenter's feelings. We've been on a long slow slide and for quite a while and 2008 ushered in a steep dive. Right about that time somebody said they were finally proud of their country. I guess if it has changed enough to make her "finally proud" then it's gotten pretty far off track for a lot of the rest of us.

As bad as things are though Teresa is right, this is still the best place to be. There's no where else to go really. America shines the last light of freedom on our corrupt world. Although it has dimmed quite a bit, its still the brightest light shining.

God does not abandon those He loves, especially when many here still love Him. However, it's not unlike Him to let some tribulation into our lives to wake us up and remind us to come back. I think we're getting ready to go through (and are going through) one heck of a "reminder". I for one pray it works.
