One of the Talkeetna Mountain bear victims tells his story, but here's the money quote:
It was so sudden. There was no time to pull out their bear deterrent spray and no one had a gun. {emphasis added}
What were they thinking? Wilderness in the States isn't wilderness in Alaska. As a good friend of mine says, "Alaska will replace 'stupid' with 'dead' quicker than anywhere else."
Word.

Weren't they wearing it on their belt? Or a lanyard? In bear country I'd have it as close to my right hand as possible...if I wasn't toting a firearm.
Even with just black bears like we have around here, I like keeping a 44 within reach at all times in bear country; bears have a way of surprising you sometimes.
