Militia, Moose, Car Wrecks and Bikinis

What more could you ask?

Eight Feet Deep and Rising Dept: Our heavy snowfall this year has proved deadly for moose in south-central Alaska. So far this winter, 118 moose have been struck and killed by trains, and the number of those struck by cars is near record levels, as well. Deep snow is always dangerous for moose. It's harder for them to forage for munchies, and the deeper snow makes them want to seek plowed areas, like streets and train tracks.

But so far, no proposals to outlaw heavy snow (or prohibit moose from standing in cleared areas) from our Legislature. They must be slipping.

Stupidity Is Its Own Reward Dept:  The three self-styled "militia" members from Fairbanks have been charged with more federal crimes. Original charges against the men claim that they were conspiring to assassinate certain government officials and judges. You can read the latest here.

Slip-Sliding Away Dept: The heavy snows have also left our streets in worse-than-usual condition. Several pedestrians have been struck by vehicles sliding across intersections and onto sidewalks, downtown. One particular store has experienced a vehicles on the sidewalk coming to rest against their plate-glass windows not once, but twice this year.

It's Hot When It's Cold Dept:  There's yet another story in today's paper about the Java Junction, one of our many coffee kiosks which features comely young ladies in bikini tops. You can read about it here, or - for those who don't like to click on links, just settle for this teaser:

re Moose: Give the legislature time. THey just need to know who to fine for all the snow and/or moose standing in the road.

re Bikini Girls: I hope they've got one heck of a heater in those kiosks!

GFA, LOL.

joated, you're probably right. And the article said they keep the interior at 80 degrees, so I'm guessing the heater never shuts off when it's this cold.

Stephen, I'd bet most of those guys don't even remember drinking the coffee.

How did I not know about Java Junction and similar places when I was there? All I ever seemed to find was coffee kiosks with fat old ladies of surly disposition who charged me like $3.00 for a 12oz styrofoam cup of crappy instant!

Gypped, I was!

Wait until Al Gore hears about the moose death's. He will get the feds involved. You know travesty like this can't be handled at the mere local and state level. But then again, Al might not get involved because investigating this might put a damper on his Global Warming idea. Don't hit moose with vehicles and by all means do not barter them for firewood.
