When It's Springtime in Alaska

it had better be warmer than this. The temp was -15 (again!) overnight, and it's only up to -10 at 9:45. We've had colder weather -- this time last year, it was -27 -- but it rarely lasts this long.

According to NOAA, the average temp at the airport for the month of January (through the 26th) was 3.8 degrees. The airport is also generally the warmest spot in town, as it's bordered by Cook Inlet to the north and south. Once again, just like with the snow, we're in record territory.

AccuHunch is still predicting another foot of snow next week, which doesn't make me happy at the moment. Big Green* needs a new water pump, and it's too dang cold to work on it at the moment. I'm driving the "new" old Neon that we recently gave to our older daughter. At least I have a vehicle I can drive until repairs are made.

The skies are clear, meaning we'll have sunshine once Sol rises high enough to clear the mountains & cast its light on town. In the meantime, everything is coated in frost, and even bare pavement is slippery enough to cause traction problems for non-4WD vehicles.

We don't need anything from the stores, so we don't have to go outside unless we want to. That's a good thing, I'm thinking.

And since it's in keeping with the situation, here's a classic for you:

*My Ford Expedition, which CARB rated as a low-emissions vehicle; in fact, in the every-other-year air quality inspections for licensing, the truck has yet to produce measurable results. Take that, enviro-weenies!
