Randomosity, 2/16/12

Due to several e-mailed inquiries, I should mention that yesterday's "Adak Files" post is not fiction; a few seemed to think it was part of my MHI Alaska story.

There was an unexpected display of northern lights on Tuesday, just in time for Valentine's Day. See photographs here.

Since the recent kidnapping of an 18-year-old barista from a coffee kiosk (she hasn't been found yet), there's a lot of community anger ... and apparently, many baristas have begun carrying, let's say, hand-held protection.

A well-meaning column in today's paper opines that arming baristas won't "solve the problem of male predators." Are you kidding me?

As long as there are men and women - and especially those of either gender who won't obey the law - there will be predators. A gun might not eliminate the problem, but two or three well-placed shots center-mass would darn sure slow 'em down!

All the liberal hand-wringing won't change the fact: negative consequences do discourage unlawful behavior. Case in the point: on the same webpage where this story appeared is another stating "Effort to reduce drunk-driving deaths is succeeding".

Some folks refuse to learn. All those inconvenient facts, don'tcha know.

That's all I've got. Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks for sharing the aurora photos. Only seen them two or three times in my life.

They said we were supposed to be able to see it down here, but sadly there was cloud cover... wouldn't you know it. *sigh*

As I was typing that I got a tweet from @twisst48 that tracks the International Space Station... sadly it is once again cloudy so I don't think I'll be able to see it at 7:30pm. *sigh*

Oh yeah - and I'm all for armed barristas. If there are people out there taking them, who will make my coffee?

Cloudy, overcast and a wintery mix much of today. No chance for seeing any auroral displays tonight.

As for the girls with guns not stopping male predators...Sure it will solve the problem. One predator at a time. Or, should the cretins read the police blotter, maybe more than one at a time as word gets around that taking "No!" for an answer is better than the alternative.

threecollie: you're welcome.

Teresa, it's almost always cloudy here whenever we get notification of an upcoming aurora event. This time there was no advance notice. And I LOL'd at your final statement. :)

joated: absolutely.
