Alaska Digest: In Like a Lamb

* It's clear and 7 degrees, with a wind chill of -4. It may be a truism, folk myth/old wives' tale or just plain superstition, but we're expecting the end of the month to be ... well, a bear.

* Gas prices have slipped just a bit to only $4.05 on my end of town.

* Andrew Breitbart is dead at 43; as Jay G. pointed out this morning, "natural causes" and "dead at 43" aren't frequently found together. That sound you hear is people sharpening their tinfoil hats all over America ... or, if you prefer, brushing out their Wookie suits. (Kashyyyk reports a late-season rush.)

* Anchorage's Fur Rondy was recently named the #1 winter carnival in the world by National Geographic.

* A Demon will lead one of the Iditarod teams this year. "Zoya DeNure of Gakona knew her husky Demon had a reputation when she rescued him about seven years ago. He wasn't well socialized, and that translated into aggression issues when she introduced him to the rest of her team. Check out our featured Meet the Sled Dogs video and find out how ornery Demon ended up as one of DeNure's lead dogs for this year's Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race."

* One more from the Daily News: "Shell launches legal strike against foes of Arctic Ocean drilling
Royal Dutch Shell launched an extraordinary pre-emptive legal strike Wednesday against opponents of offshore oil drilling in the Arctic Ocean, filing suit against more than a dozen environmental organizations likely to challenge its plan for drilling exploratory wells in the Chukchi Sea this summer." Click the link to read the whole story.

Most Alaskans* are sick and tired of the enviro-nazis going to extraordinary lengths to block any development of our natural resources. And face it, that's exactly what they're PAID to do. This is not some altruistic movement launched by tree-huggers.

* The young lady who was abducted from a coffee kiosk a month ago is still missing. APD says they're following leads, but have been unusually close-mouthed about it. The reward offered is around $70K now, and the search continues.

* Not everyone, okay? I'll delete any foul language or hostile rants against what I've said. If you have a thoughtful reply, it will stand. Otherwise, get your own blog.

Have you ever been to the East Coast in Winter? They put so much salt on the roads that it poisons the water table in some places. I've always felt that we take better care of Alaska then they ever would. Yet we're Earth destroyers if we want a road or an oilfield.

That's not unique to the East Coast, but yes. Our use of gravel and cinders, and brine for the intersections, is far less damaging than rock salt.

And frankly, I've reached the point where I don't care whatsoever about what "they" want. It's our state, and we're being responsible for it; the greenie-weenies can't say either of those things.

Odd to think of 7 degrees as coming in like a lamb. As for the end of the month...when does the spring melt start? That roar you hear may be the nearest river/stream.

We must be having a convergence on fuel prices. Our local (Mansfield, PA) Exxon is at $3.80 per gallon and going up.

Read somewhere that Breitbart had a bad ticker and this was detected last year. Certainly didn't let it slow him down! He will be missed.

Go Demon!

The Alcan would have never been built if the environuts had been as active back when.

Prayers go out to the family of this young lady. I hope I'm wrong, but at this point it would seem that closure is the best they can hope for.

joated - the "lamb" part is that it isn't a snowstorm today. As far as breakup goes, the last time we had this much snow on the ground, it lasted until mid-May. The big thaw will probably start in mid- to late April, though.

It was the Army Corps of Engineers that built the Alcan, to aid the war effort ... so it was going to get built. I'm sure someone probably moaned about the trees that were cut down, at the time.

As far as the coffee barista is concerned, I'm not sure if she came to harm, or just eloped. Neither report would surprise me.
