"First Day of Spring" and Other Myths

It's-All-a-Matter-of-Perspective Dept:  The calendar says it's the vernal equinox, which isn't true except for those at a certain latitude. One size, as most shoppers know, definitely doesn't fit all.

Our "equal parts daylight and darkness" was three days ago, not that it matters. It's 11 degrees, and we still have three feet of densely-compacted snow on the ground.

It's-About-Freakin'-Time Dept:  After a series of highly-publicized crashes in which the oxygen delivery system failed in F-22 fighters, including one in Denali National Park last year, the Air Force is going to "modify the handle that engages the emergency oxygen system" in those aircraft. Just look how long it took the brass to figure out that pilots need to breathe.

Next week, they'll discuss the topic "Visibility: Needed? Or flight of fancy?"

Heavy-Snow-is-Heavy Dept:  Roofs continue to collapse under the weight of our near-record snow. The latest was an auto parts store in Palmer (about 40 miles north of Anchorage) on Sunday.

The decision by the Air Force is actually quite swift if one considers the number of committees it probably had to go through.

*One to determine the probelm.
*One to examine the problem and come up with a possible solution.
*One to review the solution (and possibly offer an alternative) and then determine the cost.
*One to write the final report and pass it on to the powers-that-be for final approval.
Etc. Etc. Etc.

Meanwhile a pilot and a guy on the ground crew probably jury-rigged some solution with a paperclip and some duct tape.
